Ready to get out of the house?
This summer, Davie High School will once again offer its STEAM Summer Enrichment Trip series to all current DHS students (including rising freshmen).
From museums and industry tours to college campus visits, design challenges, and a volunteer day to help us get ready for the new school year, there will be plenty of ways to explore, learn, and get involved. Stay tuned throughout the summer for trip opportunities.
This Year's Trips
Trip: Catawba College Center for the Environment
Trip Info: Join us for a morning exploring Catawba College in Salisbury, NC. We will begin at the Center for the Environment on Catawba’s campus with a walk through the Catawba College Preserve. The Preserve is used for research, forestry, and wetland studies. An instructor will provide various activities that may include water sampling, collecting and looking at critters from different water sources, and determining characteristics of wetlands and/or tree populations. Join us for another great trip to Catawba!

Trip: UNC Charlotte William States Lee School of Engineering
Trip Info: This trip will take us on a tour of the UNC Charlotte William States Lee School of Engineering where students will be exposed to the different types of engineering studies they offer: civil, environmental, computer, electrical, & mechanical (including motorsports concentration). Students will see labs, classrooms, and other academic spaces for engineering as well as other majors. As part of this trip, students will complete a hands-on design challenge and learn about different aspects of college life. Whether engineering is your future career or not, this experience will be a great opportunity to learn more about the ways engineering impacts all of our lives (whether we realize it or not).

Trip: Wake Forest University School of Medicine Clarkson Large Animal Campus & Lam Museum of Anthropology
Trip Info: We will start the day’s trip at the Clarkson Research Campus, a 200-acre academic and science-and-technology hub in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, operated by the Wake Forest University School of Medicine (WFUSOM). While there, we will hear about their humane animal research practices, the necessity for this type of research, & careers in research. We will also do a walk-through of a variety of species to see animal behaviors, housing, & enrichment. Students will also get to do some hands-on activities to learn more about pathology, DNA, & brain research. We will then stop at Chick-fil-A for lunch on the way to the Lam Museum of Anthropology where students will learn specifically about Australian Aboriginal culture through a lesson & activity combining history with art. Then, students will have an opportunity to explore the rest of the museum through a scavenger hunt.

Event: STEAM Volunteer Day
Event Info: Do you need volunteer hours? Do you just want to see other people? We would love to see YOU. Help Davie High get the year started off right by joining us on our annual STEAM Volunteer Day. By signing up, you are committing to all 3 hours. Any Davie High student may participate in this annual event where students come on campus to volunteer to serve their own school. It is win-win for everyone involved! We will be creating bulletin boards, making signs, helping teachers in classrooms, picking up trash, and much more!

Trip: Kannapolis Cannon Ballers Stadium Tour & NC State Plants for Human Health Institute
Trip Info: Join us for a trip to Kannapolis, NC! The day will begin with an industry tour of Atrium Health Ballpark — home of the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers — where we will get a glimpse beyond the athletics of a baseball team and into the many different jobs it takes to thrive as a successful business that knocks it out of the park. Lunch will be on your own in downtown Kannapolis with restaurants within walking distance (Sabor, Hong Kong, Corner Crust, & Subway). We will also have an opportunity to do some shopping or enjoy ice cream and other treats from downtown businesses. We will wrap up our time in Kannapolis at the NC State Plants for Human Health Institute (PHHI), a research & education organization, located on the North Carolina Research Campus where we will do a science lab led by a scientist.
